The Darkroom series is a collection of analog photography created with light-sensitive material in the darkroom. The darkroom practice has been redesigned by manipulating the enlargers, varying the light sources and using different chemicals, in order to capture even the smallest light effects and radically deconstruct the image. This photogram series explores the painterly quality of light and pushes the photographic material to its physical limits.
All distortions and colors are made in the darkroom, by exposing different materials such as glass spheres, crystals, geometric objects, x-rays, old films, etc... on gelatin-silver paper, transformed in such a way as to create extreme light situations and develop figures and objects which are barely recognizable. The length of exposure, together with chemical treatments of the paper, determine the intensity of the color. Some final images soak in acids or are buried in soil for weeks, thus changing their colors or compromising the photographic emulsion. This technique embraces the photographic “errors” of the analog development process with a lack of contrast, scratches, over or under exposure and does not really differentiate between a positive image or negative image.
